About Tendo and Yamagata

Welcome to Tendō: Hot Springs, Shogi, and Gateway to Scenic Yamagata

Tendō's Unique Culture: The Shogi Capital

Tendō is known nationwide as the capital of Shogi (Japanese Chess) pieces. Over 95% of the shogi pieces used in Japan are produced here. This heritage is celebrated throughout the city, where you can:

  • Try your hand at painting your own shogi piece (a great souvenir).

  • Visit local shops and museums to browse the beautifully crafted traditional pieces and learn about the history of this unique regional craft.

  • (Note: The famous Human Shogi Game takes place in the spring, but the shogi experience is available year-round.)

Food and Local Specialties in Season

Yamagata Prefecture is a true culinary destination. In Tendō, you can enjoy a wide variety of food, focusing on seasonal products available during your visit:

  • Late Summer Fruits: While the cherry season is over, late August and early September is a wonderful time to enjoy other fresh, local produce! Look out for sweet peaches and the beginning of the grape and apple harvesting season.

  • Local Dining: Since Tendō Onsen is located right in the town center, many local restaurants are lined up nearby, offering everything from savory local dishes to delicious Soba (buckwheat noodles) and excellent local Sake (Japanese rice wine), which are available year-round.

Tendō Onsen: Soft, Healing Waters

Tendō Onsen has flourished as a beloved hot spring resort since its discovery in the rice fields in 1911. It offers unique, soft spring water that is gentle and easy for anyone to enjoy. Its central location in the town makes it an ideal and accessible base for exploring the surrounding areas.

We hope you enjoy Yamagata's bountiful food and nature, along with the relaxing, soft warmth of Tendō Onsen.

Recommended Sightseeing: Yamadera (Risshaku-ji Temple)

The editor of this page strongly recommends visiting Yamadera for sightseeing!

Located just a short and convenient train ride from Tendō, Yamadera (Risshaku-ji Temple) offers a truly unforgettable experience. To reach the top and see the famous Godaidō Hall, you climb 1,015 stone steps, but the effort is rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the valley below. It's a spectacular example of traditional Japanese religious architecture seamlessly integrated with natural mountain scenery.
